Tesla Optimus Enters BYD Factory: First Large-Scale Humanoid Robot Deployment

In October 2027, the assembly line at BYD Factory No. 46 in Shenzhen welcomed 200 new workers — Tesla Optimus humanoid robots. Standing 1.73 meters tall with nimble hands, they handle battery pack transport, screw fastening, and quality inspection tasks.

This marks the world's first large-scale humanoid robot deployment at a major automotive plant.

Performance Metrics

According to BYD's published data, Optimus achieved a 99.2% product quality rate on battery pack assembly — slightly below a skilled human worker (99.7%), but excelling in endurance: the robots can run 24 hours a day with zero workplace injuries.

Each robot works 16 hours per day across three shifts. Human workers have transitioned to supervisory and exception-handling roles.

The Worker Perspective

"I used to worry robots would take our jobs. Now I see them as hard-working partners," said a seven-year factory veteran. His current role: oversee robot operations and intervene when anomalies occur.

BYD says the deployment reduced the battery assembly line headcount from 500 to 280, while creating 120 new roles: robot maintenance and human-robot collaboration positions.

What's Next

Tesla says it plans to scale Optimus production to 50,000 units annually by 2028, with exports to factories in Germany and Japan. The humanoid robotics race has attracted Huawei, Xiaomi, and Unitree as fast-followers.
