Fully Autonomous Hotel Service Robot Fleet HotelBot Opens in Tokyo: 200-Room Hotel Needs Only 3 Human Staff

SoftBank Robotics and Marriott International jointly open the worlds first fully autonomous robot hotel in Tokyo. The 200-room hotel requires only 3 human staff, with all other services performed by robots.

SoftBank Robotics and Marriott International jointly opened the worlds first fully autonomous robot hotel, Moxy by Bot, on November 3 in Tokyo Odaiba. The 200-room hotel retains only 3 human staff, with all other services performed by robots.

The hotels robot team includes 6 front-desk reception robots supporting Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean; 12 housekeeping robots each capable of cleaning a standard room in 25 minutes; 4 luggage handling robots; and 8 food delivery robots. All robots coordinate through a central dispatch system.

SoftBank Robotics CEO introduced the core technology behind HotelBot as the Swarm Task Scheduling Engine. This engine dynamically assigns robot tasks and routes based on real-time occupancy, room status, and guest demand. During peak periods, 12 housekeeping robots automatically divide floors and priorities, avoiding mutual waiting and route conflicts.

The hotel is priced roughly 35% below comparable Marriott-brand hotels in the area, at approximately 12,000 yen per night. Two weeks of trial operation data show a customer satisfaction score of 4.2 out of 5, with the main complaints centering on robots inadequate handling of complex complaints.

The model has sparked widespread industry discussion. The Japan Ryokan and Hotel Association issued a statement expressing deep concern about robots replacing hotel workers. Marriott Internationals Asia-Pacific president stated that if the Tokyo pilot succeeds, plans call for opening similar hotels in Osaka, Bangkok, and Singapore by the end of 2029.
