UnplugWeek Digital Detox Retreats Take Off in Japan: Giving Urbanites a Break From Screens

The UnplugWeek digital detox retreat in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, has welcomed its 1,000th participant. The week-long program completely blocks electronic devices, giving urbanites a break from screens and reconnecting them with paper, conversation, and nature.

The retreat sits in a forest near Karuizawa in Nagano. Upon arrival, attendees hand over all their smart devices to the staff and receive traditional paper, pen, board games, and books in return. Each day is filled with hiking, cooking, handicrafts, and group discussions.

Founder Kenji Sato said the idea for UnplugWeek came from his own experience. Three years ago, severe insomnia brought on by heavy screen dependence pushed him into a ten-day silent retreat that resolved his symptoms completely. He wanted to bring that experience to more city dwellers.

Each UnplugWeek session takes about 30 participants and costs 8,800 dollars per person. Of the 1,000 participants so far, about 67 percent are corporate managers between 30 and 45, 22 percent work in creative industries, and 11 percent come from other fields. Post-retreat surveys show average sleep quality scores rise by 41 percent and anxiety scores drop by 37 percent.
