AI-Powered Liquid Biopsy Platform LiquidScope Deep Dive: Screening 12 Early-Stage Cancers From a Single Blood Draw

Grail launches second-generation multi-cancer early detection platform LiquidScope, screening 12 cancer types before symptoms appear through circulating tumor DNA and methylation pattern analysis, with 83% stage I sensitivity.

Finding Cancer Before It Shows

The most effective treatment window for cancer is often in early stages before symptoms appear. Liquid biopsy technology offers a non-invasive solution — a single blood draw can detect trace amounts of tumor-derived DNA fragments.

American company Grail today launched second-generation multi-cancer early detection platform LiquidScope. Compared to its predecessor Galleri, LiquidScope shows significant improvements in detection sensitivity, cancer type coverage, and false positive rates.

Technical Principles

When tumor cells die, their DNA fragments are released into the blood as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). ctDNA typically constitutes only 0.01% to 1% of total cell-free DNA but carries tumor-specific mutations and methylation information. LiquidScope's breakthrough lies in its deep analysis of DNA methylation patterns using whole-genome bisulfite sequencing to detect methylation states at millions of CpG sites.

Performance Data

In a 15,000-subject prospective trial, LiquidScope achieved 83% overall sensitivity across 12 cancer types: 67% for stage I, 84% for stage II, 92% for stage III, and 97% for stage IV. Specificity was 99.5%.

Covered Cancer Types

The 12 covered cancers — including lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, pancreatic, liver, ovarian, esophageal, gastric, bladder cancers, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma — account for approximately 65% of global cancer deaths. For 5 of these (pancreatic, ovarian, liver, esophageal, and gastric), LiquidScope provides the first available screening method.

Single-test cost is $950 with annual recommendation.
