Solid-State Battery Goes from Lab to Production Line: Multiple Automakers Announce 2028 Launch Plans

Following QuantumScape's solid-state battery production line completion, Toyota, Nissan, and BYD announce solid-state battery vehicle plans, ushering in a new phase of EV range competition.

Commercialization of solid-state batteries accelerated dramatically in 2027. This month, QuantumScape announced the completion of its solid-state battery mass production line in Silicon Valley, with annual capacity planned at 1 GWh. On the same day, Toyota announced it would equip its premium models with solid-state batteries starting in 2028, with a range exceeding 1,200km.

Progress by Maker

Toyota: Pre-orders open for solid-state battery models, officially supporting 10 minutes for 10%-80% fast charging, with battery lifespan reaching 300,000km with less than 10% capacity degradation.

Nissan: Released full solid-state battery test data showing energy density of 450Wh/kg, nearly double current ternary lithium batteries.

BYD: Announced its Blade Battery solid-state version has completed third-party safety testing, first equipped on the Yangwang brand.

Charging Infrastructure

Solid-state battery commercialization is also driving charging infrastructure upgrades. State Grid Corporation of China announced it will deploy 2,000 800V ultra-fast charging stations at national highway service areas by 2028, fully compatible with high-voltage charging needs of solid-state battery vehicles.

Industry Impact

Analysts note that widespread solid-state battery adoption could fundamentally solve EV range anxiety, with EV penetration rate expected to exceed 60% before 2030.
