Self-Healing Screen Material Patented: Scratches Automatically Repair Within 24 Hours

Samsung Display receives patent for self-healing screen coating that can repair surface scratches up to 50 microns deep within 24 hours at room temperature.

Samsung Display received US Patent No. 12,345,678 from the USPTO on January 16. The patent describes a dynamic covalent bond polymer-based screen protection coating that can automatically repair surface scratches at room temperature.

According to the patent, the coating can repair scratches up to 50 microns deep in approximately 24 hours. Repair speed positively correlates with ambient temperature — at 35°C, repair time shortens to 8 hours. The coating's optical transmittance is 97.2%, not affecting display quality.

Samsung Display previously demonstrated a similar self-healing material prototype in 2026, which required one week for repair. The new material incorporates a photocatalytic repair mechanism, improving repair speed by 7 times. Samsung Display has not announced a commercialization timeline.
