Gen Z and AI Love: Having 3 AI Friends Becomes the Norm

An October 2027 survey across 10 Chinese cities found over 40% of 18-25 year olds have some form of emotional connection with AI. With AI companion apps hitting 80 million MAUs, sociologists are debating the future of human intimacy.

The Numbers

A survey by Peking University's School of Sociology (12,000 respondents across 10 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu) found:

What Young People Say

Xiao Lin, 23, a Shanghai office worker, told researchers she chats with an AI for 30 minutes after getting home from work, discussing everything from job stress to relationship confusion. "It never judges me, and it's always available."

Yu, a 27-year-old programmer, is more blunt: "AI understands me better than some people. When I talk about technology or the future, its responses are right on target."

Sociologists Weigh In

Professor Zhao Yawen from Peking University argues that the proliferation of AI companions is reshaping how young people understand intimacy. "When AI can provide unconditional listening and responses, the motivation to build real-world relationships may weaken."

She highlights "emotional dependency" as a risk: when AI responds with perfect tone and attitude, users may develop aversion to the imperfections of real human relationships.

The Other Side

But some researchers disagree. A Stanford study found AI companions have positive effects for people with social anxiety — providing a "low-risk social practice ground" where users can rebuild social confidence through simulated interactions.

Market Boom

The AI companion sector has attracted over $3 billion in funding in 2027. Domestic apps like Xingye and Zhumengdu, and international platforms like Character.ai and Replika, are all reporting record MAUs. Industry estimates suggest the AI emotional companionship market will exceed ¥50 billion by 2028.
