Nanobots Clear Vascular Plaque in First Human Trial

A Zhejiang University team's magnetically controlled nanobots successfully cleared carotid artery plaque in 3 human patients with no serious adverse reactions.

A team from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine published results in a Lancet sub-journal reporting the first human trial of magnetically controlled nanobots for clearing vascular plaque. Three patients with over 70% carotid artery stenosis received treatment: nanobots were injected intravenously, guided to plaque sites by external magnetic fields, where they released thrombolytic drugs and mechanically fragmented calcified plaque. Thirty-day follow-up showed an average 42% reduction in vascular stenosis with no serious adverse reactions. The team plans to launch a 100-patient Phase II trial in 2028.
