First Commercial Underwater Communication Network Goes Live in South China Sea

Huawei Marine and CNOOC have jointly built the first commercial submarine acoustic-optical hybrid communication network, enabling real-time data transmission at 500-meter depths.

Huawei Marine Networks and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) jointly announced that the first commercial underwater communication network has officially gone live in the South China Sea. The network uses an optical-acoustic hybrid architecture covering six deepwater oil and gas platforms, supporting real-time data transmission at depths of 500 meters with bandwidth reaching 10Mbps. Previously, deep-sea platform data required transmission through periodic surface relay buoys with delays of several hours. The new network enables real-time monitoring and remote operation of subsea equipment.
