Modular Smartphone Morphix Launches: Users Can Swap Processors, Cameras, and Battery Modules Themselves

Dutch hardware company Fairphone and Framework jointly release the Morphix modular smartphone, allowing users to swap processor, camera module, battery, and display through standardized interfaces, extending phone lifespan from 2 to over 7 years.

Dutch hardware company Fairphone and American modular laptop maker Framework have jointly released the Morphix modular smartphone. The device uses a standardized Module-S interface protocol, allowing users to swap processor modules, camera modules, battery, and display without professional tools.

Morphix processor modules are ARM-based and available in three performance tiers. Camera modules include standard wide-angle, telephoto, and macro options. Users can upgrade any module after purchase without replacing the entire device.

Fairphone CEO Eva Gouwens stated at the Amsterdam launch that roughly 5.3 billion phones are discarded globally each year, with an average lifespan of just 2.3 years. Morphix aims to extend phone lifespan to over 7 years while maintaining competitive performance through module upgrades.

The device starts at 599 euros for the base configuration, with individual modules priced between 49 and 199 euros. Framework founder Nirav Patel revealed that over 40 third-party hardware manufacturers have expressed interest in developing compatible modules.

Environmental organizations have responded positively, though supply chain analysts note that modular design increases device thickness and weight. Morphix measures 11.2mm thick, roughly 40% thicker than mainstream flagships. The challenges of dust and water resistance for standardized interfaces also warrant attention.
