Orchid-Inspired Inspection Robot OrchidSentry: The Silent Environmental Monitor in the Forest

OrchidSentry, jointly released by Nanyang Technological University's Robotics Research Center and Singapore's National Parks Board, is a forest inspection robot designed to mimic the form of an orchid. The robot completed a six-month field deployment in Singapore's Central Catchment Nature Reserve, successfully identifying 217 plant and animal species with 91 percent accuracy.

OrchidSentry, jointly released by Nanyang Technological University's Robotics Research Center and Singapore's National Parks Board, is a forest inspection robot designed to mimic the form of an orchid. The robot has a highly realistic tropical orchid appearance and can move silently across the forest floor without disturbing wildlife, making it the first bionic robot designed specifically for long-term ecological monitoring.

The project grew out of long-standing pain points in forest ecological monitoring. Traditional inspection relies on manual patrols, which are inefficient and cannot cover remote areas. Early robot inspection schemes could go further, but the mechanical appearance and noise would startle wildlife, actually affecting the authenticity of monitoring data. The NTU team's inspiration came from tropical rainforests. Orchids are the quietest presence in the rainforest, almost invisible outside of bloom season.

The core technology is the fusion of bionic movement and appearance. OrchidSentry's chassis uses a four-legged flexible structure with soft-material joints instead of rigid motors, making almost no sound while moving. Visually, the robot's petals use biodegradable plastic with real orchid-color printing, blending into the environment without easy discovery. Each robot weighs about 2.4 kilograms and can carry temperature, humidity, PM2.5, ultraviolet, and acoustic sensors.

For deployment, the National Parks Board deployed 24 OrchidSentry robots in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The robots formed a self-organizing network, patrolling once per day along preset routes and transmitting data back through 4G. During the six-month field deployment, OrchidSentry successfully identified 217 plant and animal species (including endangered species such as the Malayan pangolin and white-necked crow), with an identification accuracy of 91 percent.

For applications, OrchidSentry is particularly suited to long-term monitoring in biodiversity-sensitive areas. The National Parks Board has incorporated it into the regular monitoring system, tripling the protected area coverage as planned. The NTU team is also in talks with tropical rainforest management agencies in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brazil, with the low-cost version of OrchidSentry (about 12,000 dollars per unit) suitable for deployment in developing countries.

On the commercialization path, OrchidSentry is commercialized by spinout BioMimetic Robotics Pte Ltd. The product will be offered to national parks and environmental organizations as a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) at about 480 dollars per unit per month, covering equipment, deployment, maintenance, and data analysis. BioMimetic has secured a 12 million Singapore dollar Series A from Temasek, valuing the company at 68 million Singapore dollars.

Critics point out that deploying bionic robots in forests could introduce new ecological risks, such as robot battery leakage potentially contaminating soil. The NTU team responded that OrchidSentry uses solid-state lithium batteries and a sealed chassis, with a battery life of five years without replacement. At the same time, retired robots are recovered by the deployer to ensure no contamination is left behind. The team is also developing a fully biodegradable next-generation version, with the goal of achieving complete biodegradability by 2027.
