On October 10, 2029, DeepMind and CERN jointly released AthenaX, an AI system capable of independently completing the entire scientific discovery pipeline. Unlike previous AI tools that focused on individual steps, AthenaX automates the end-to-end process from hypothesis formulation, experimental design, and data collection to analysis and paper writing.

AthenaX's first independent research paper has been accepted by Nature. The paper identifies novel phase transition properties in a quantum material that had previously escaped human notice. The three listed "authors" are the AthenaX system itself, an automated laboratory that handled experimental operations, and a CERN physicist who provided supervisory review.

"AthenaX isn't doing literature reviews or data analysis," said DeepMind Chief Scientist Pushmeet Kohli at the launch event. "It's doing real science — proposing hypotheses, designing experiments, validating or refuting them. This is a fundamental shift in the scientific method."

The system's architecture comprises three modules: a hypothesis generator that identifies knowledge gaps from massive scientific literature and experimental data, an experiment designer that formulates optimal experimental protocols based on available equipment, and an analysis engine that performs statistical verification of results and proposes follow-up hypotheses.

Initial testing partners include MIT, the Max Planck Institute, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the testing period, AthenaX independently produced seven publishable-quality papers across materials science, molecular biology, and astrophysics. "Some of the correlations AthenaX discovered in materials science, our team spent three years without noticing," said Zhang Wei, a researcher at the CAS Institute of Computing Technology.

The development has sparked intense debate in the academic community. Cambridge University philosophy professor Timothy Williamson wrote in a commentary: "If AI can independently conduct scientific discovery, what is the role of the scientist? Do we need to redefine what it means to 'understand' a scientific phenomenon?"

AthenaX is currently available only to research institutions at an annual licensing fee of $2 million. DeepMind states that human scientists still provide final review during the system's operation, but as capabilities improve, the review step may gradually diminish.
