AI Grading System GPA-X Rolled Out Across Universities: The Ultimate Battle Between Academic Freedom and Efficiency

Twelve UK Russell Group universities have jointly deployed GPA-X, an AI grading system that automatically marks essays and generates learning feedback. Teacher unions and student organizations strongly oppose it, arguing AI grading threatens academic freedom and educational equity.

Twelve UK Russell Group universities jointly announced in June 2028 the deployment of GPA-X, an AI grading system developed by Cambridge's Education Technology Lab that can automatically mark undergraduate essays, assess assignments, and generate personalized learning feedback.

Pilot data shows 87% consistency between AI and professor grading, with marking speed 20x faster. Cambridge's pro-vice-chancellor said: "GPA-X frees professors from repetitive marking so they can focus more on teaching and research."

However, the University and College Union (UCU) strongly opposes the system. UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: "AI grading is a fundamental threat to academic freedom. When student grades are determined by algorithms, education's personalized and critical dimensions are erased."

The National Union of Students also expressed concern that AI grading may favor standardized writing styles while penalizing creative but non-conforming expression.

Oxford and UCL have explicitly stated they will not adopt GPA-X, insisting human professors complete all grading.
