AI-Assisted Surgical Robot SurgeOne Reaches 50,000 Surgeries in China: 99.4 Percent Success Rate

The SurgeOne AI-assisted surgical robot, developed jointly by China Microtech and Zhongshan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, has completed a cumulative 50,000 surgeries. Success rates exceed 99 percent across general surgery, urology, and gynecology, marking a step up for domestically developed surgical robots in clinical practice.

SurgeOne uses force-feedback robotic arms and a high-definition 3D vision system. Surgeons operate the robot remotely from a console and the arms translate the surgeon's movements precisely inside the patient. The AI assistance module provides real-time guidance at key steps, including identifying blood vessels and nerves and recommending cut angles.

Fan Jia, an academician and president of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, said SurgeOne has dramatically shortened the surgeon learning curve. A laparoscopic surgery expert who previously needed ten years of training can now reach the same level in three years with SurgeOne. The shift is expected to ease the shortage of surgeons at grassroots hospitals.

SurgeOne has been installed at 280 hospitals across China and is priced at about 60 percent of comparable imported systems.
