AI-Coordinated Drone Swarm SkySwarm Deployed in California Wildfire Rescue: 100 Drones Real-Time 3D Fire Mapping

Skydio deployed its SkySwarm drone swarm system at large scale for the first time during a wildfire rescue operation in Northern California on November 5. One hundred autonomous drones formed a swarm, continuously flying over the fire zone to generate real-time 3D thermal maps relayed to fire command centers. Fire departments used this intelligence to optimize deployment strategies, tripling firefighting efficiency.

SkySwarm's core technology is "decentralized coordination" — each drone doesn't need continuous communication with the command center but accomplishes global tasks through local coordination with neighboring drones. Even if some drones lose contact due to smoke or thermal updrafts, the swarm automatically reorganizes and continues working.

Each SkySwarm drone is equipped with an infrared thermal imager and multispectral camera, enabling it to "see" the true distribution of flames through heavy smoke. Map data updates every 30 seconds with 10-centimeter precision.
