Pipeline Inspection and Repair Micro-Robot Swarm PipeBot Completes First Commercial Deployment in London

UK startup Pipebots micro pipeline robots complete their first commercial deployment in London. The 2cm-diameter robots carry welding tools and sealant to autonomously detect and repair small leaks in underground water mains without shutting off water supply.

UK startup Pipebots micro pipeline robots completed their first commercial deployment in London in late October. These 2cm-diameter, 8cm-long robots enter the urban water supply network through fire hydrants, carrying miniature cameras, ultrasonic flaw detectors, and welding sealant tools.

The robots autonomously navigate within pipes, scanning pipe wall thickness with ultrasonics. Upon detecting weak points or small cracks, they use micro welding heads and sealant for repair. The entire process requires no water shutoff, with a single robot capable of inspecting and repairing leaks along approximately 500 meters of pipe in 8 hours.

Thames Water purchased an initial batch of 100 PipeBots, planning to cover central Londons core pipe network by 2029. The company estimates PipeBot can reduce water loss from pipe leaks by approximately 30%, saving roughly 18 million pounds in annual operating costs.
