Global Wi-Fi Roaming Protocol RoamAir 2.0: One Login for International Hotspots

RoamAir 2.0, released by the Wireless Broadband Alliance, lets users seamlessly connect to partner Wi-Fi networks worldwide. The protocol is backed by 42 telecom operators globally and covers 140,000 public hotspots in airports, hotels, and cafes.

RoamAir 2.0, the Wi-Fi roaming protocol released by the Wireless Broadband Alliance, lets users connect to partner Wi-Fi networks worldwide without re-entering credentials or signing up for new accounts. The protocol has the support of 42 telecom operators globally and covers 140,000 public hotspots at airports, hotels, cafes, and other venues.

At the heart of RoamAir 2.0 is SIM-based automatic authentication. When a user enters the range of a partner hotspot, the phone uses credentials stored on the SIM card to authenticate within three seconds. The user is billed through the home carrier, with no per-hotspot payment needed.

China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom have all joined the deployment. Chinese travelers abroad can now use the service in 32 countries, and roaming rates are far lower than traditional international data, at just 0.02 dollars per minute.

Tiago Rodrigues, CEO of the WBA, said RoamAir 2.0 will unlock the full potential of public Wi-Fi, positioning it as a complement to 5G rather than a competitor.
