Open-Source Satellite Mesh Network Kit MeshSat Crowdfunds: Anyone Can Launch Their Own Micro Communication Node

MeshSat provides standardized 3U CubeSat communication modules and an open-source protocol stack, enabling universities and small organizations to participate in satellite internet construction.

On September 17, 2030, nonprofit organization OpenOrbit launched a Kickstarter campaign for the MeshSat open-source satellite mesh network kit. The kit includes standardized 3U CubeSat communication modules, an open-source protocol stack, and ground station reference designs, enabling universities, research institutions, and even individual enthusiasts to launch a communication satellite and join a global mesh network for approximately $50,000.

MeshSat's 3U CubeSat module integrates an S-band transceiver, inter-satellite laser communication terminal, and solar power system. A single satellite provides approximately 10Mbps of communication bandwidth, and through relay by other satellites in the MeshSat network, global coverage can be achieved.

OpenOrbit founder and former SpaceX engineer Sarah Chen said satellite internet is currently monopolized by a handful of large companies, and MeshSat's goal is to "return the right to space communication to ordinary people." "We're not trying to compete with Starlink — we're creating an open, decentralized satellite communication network where anyone can contribute nodes."

The crowdfunding goal is $2 million, with $870,000 raised within 48 hours of launch. The first 12 MeshSat satellites are planned to enter orbit in Q2 2031 via SpaceX's rideshare launch service. OpenOrbit says the network needs at least 100 satellites to provide basic global coverage.

Notably, MeshSat's frequency bands have been coordinated with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), but national spectrum regulations may still pose obstacles. OpenOrbit has hired a dedicated regulatory advisory team to handle spectrum licensing applications in various countries.
