Digital Identity Passport Recognized by 128 Countries: One Electronic Passport for Global Travel

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced that its Digital Travel Credential (DTC) standard has now been accepted by 128 countries, enabling travelers to carry a verified electronic passport on their smartphone instead of a physical booklet. The system uses biometric binding — facial recognition plus fingerprint — tied to a government-issued cryptographic credential stored in the phone's secure enclave.

Singapore, Estonia, and South Korea were early adopters, processing over 2 million digital passport crossings in 2027. The US, UK, and all 27 EU member states joined this quarter. Travelers scan a QR code at immigration gates, and the system verifies identity in under three seconds. ICAO says physical passports remain valid but expects digital credentials to handle 40% of all international crossings by 2030. Lost passport incidents have dropped 82% in pilot countries.
