Cross-Border Data Portability Standard DataPort Receives G20 Framework Endorsement: One-Click Migration of All Personal Data Between Platforms

The OECD-led DataPort cross-border data portability standard receives G20 framework endorsement, allowing users to migrate all personal data between social, shopping, and cloud storage platforms with a single click.

The OECD-led DataPort cross-border data portability standard received G20 framework endorsement in late October. The standard requires major internet platforms to provide standardized data export interfaces within six months, enabling users to migrate all personal data, including social relationship graphs, purchase histories, content creation records, and AI training preference settings, to competing platforms with a single click.

DataPort goes beyond the data portability rights already established in the EUs GDPR by adding provisions for social relationship graph portability. This means users can take their friend connections with them when switching social platforms, rather than rebuilding their social network from scratch.

Meta and Google have signaled willingness to comply, though TikTok parent ByteDance stated it needs to evaluate cross-border data transfer compliance requirements. The first DataPort-supporting platforms are expected to launch in Q1 2029.
