AI Bone Marrow Transplant Matching Engine MarrowMatch Launches: Match Success Rate Jumps From 30% to 78%

MarrowMatch, developed jointly by the National Marrow Donor Program and IBM, uses deep analysis of HLA typing and non-HLA factors to boost bone marrow transplant match success rates from 30% to 78%.

AI Bone Marrow Transplant Matching Engine MarrowMatch Launches: Match Success Rate Jumps From 30% to 78%

MarrowMatch, the AI matching engine developed jointly by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and IBM Research, officially launched on June 12. The engine goes beyond traditional six-locus HLA matching, comprehensively analyzing 32 dimensions — including 12-locus HLA typing, KIR genotypes, non-HLA immune factors, and donor-recipient age differences — to identify optimal matches from a global database of 38 million bone marrow donors.

In retrospective validation, transplants using MarrowMatch-recommended donors showed a 48% improvement in actual survival rates compared to traditional matching methods. For minority patients (who traditionally face matching difficulties), the improvement was even more striking — match success rates rose from 18% to 65%.

NMDP says MarrowMatch will cover all newly registered bone marrow transplant matching requests within the next six months.
