AI Osteoporosis Early Warning System BonePredict Receives FDA Approval: Predicting Fracture Risk 5 Years in Advance

Zebra Medical Vision announced on July 28 that its BonePredict AI osteoporosis early warning system received FDA approval. The system can extract subtle bone density change information from routine chest X-rays — information invisible to the naked eye — and, combined with patient age, gender, and medical history data, predict the risk of osteoporotic fractures five years in advance.

In a retrospective validation involving 120,000 patients, BonePredict achieved a fracture risk prediction accuracy of 84%, far exceeding traditional DXA bone density testing (approximately 65% accuracy). The system's greatest advantage is its "piggyback" approach — patients don't need any additional tests; the system runs automatically when chest X-rays are taken for other reasons.

BonePredict has been integrated into the PACS systems of 300 U.S. hospitals, with each analysis costing $15.
