Solid-State Lithium Metal Battery SolidCore Surpasses 600 Wh/kg: Electric Aircraft Range Exceeds 1,500 Kilometers for the First Time

QuantumScapes second-generation solid-state lithium metal battery SolidCore achieves 620 Wh/kg energy density in third-party testing with over 1,200 cycle life. Joby Aviations electric aircraft powered by the battery completes a 1,520-kilometer flight test.

QuantumScape disclosed third-party testing data for its second-generation solid-state lithium metal battery SolidCore on November 1. In independent verification by TUV SUD, SolidCore cell energy density reached 620 Wh/kg, approximately twice that of current mainstream ternary lithium batteries, with 80% capacity retention after 1,200 cycles.

Joby Aviations electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle powered by SolidCore battery packs completed a 1,520-kilometer flight test in late October, flying from San Jose to Phoenix with a single mid-route charging stop. Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt stated that SolidCore has significantly advanced the commercial viability of electric aircraft.

QuantumScape plans to begin delivering production cells to automotive and aviation customers in Q3 2029.
