Hydrogen Truck Fleet HyFleet Rolls Out Across Germany: 110 Tons of CO2 Saved Per Vehicle Each Year

HyFleet, the hydrogen truck fleet jointly deployed by German logistics giant DB Schenker and Daimler Truck, now covers Germany's main freight corridors. With the first 200 Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks in operation, the fleet is expected to cut a combined 22,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Each GenH2 truck is equipped with an 80 kWh dual battery system and a 70 kg liquid hydrogen tank. Refueling takes about 10 to 15 minutes and the trucks can travel more than 1,000 kilometers on a full tank, addressing the range shortfall that plagued earlier hydrogen trucks.

Hagen Schmidt, chief operating officer of DB Schenker, said the company plans to expand the hydrogen fleet to 1,000 vehicles by 2027, gradually replacing the existing diesel heavy truck fleet. Daimler Truck has committed to lifting GenH2 production from 500 units per year to 3,000 to meet demand.

On hydrogen sourcing, DB Schenker has committed to using only green hydrogen, meaning hydrogen produced by electrolyzing water with renewable electricity. The company has signed a long-term supply agreement with RWE, locking in a price of 5.5 euros per kilogram.
