Japan's Toshiba announced on January 7 that its HeatRecover thermoelectric conversion module has officially entered mass production. The module uses novel bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric materials to convert low-temperature industrial waste heat between 80 and 200 degrees Celsius into electricity, achieving a conversion efficiency of 12%.

Over 50% of energy in global industrial production is lost as waste heat, most of it at 100-200 degrees Celsius — a range that previously lacked economically viable recovery solutions. The HeatRecover module has completed pilots at three Japanese steel mills, with each factory recovering approximately 2 GWh of electricity annually.

Toshiba expects HeatRecover to pay for itself within 3 years and has already received significant orders from manufacturing companies in China and Germany.
