Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cell DualSun Breaks 36% Efficiency: A New Photovoltaic Conversion Record

LONGi Green Energy and Oxford PV today announced that their jointly developed DualSun perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell has been certified by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) at a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 36.1%, setting a new world record for photovoltaic cells.

DualSun uses a dual-junction tandem structure: the top layer is a wide-bandgap perovskite cell (absorbing short-wavelength photons), and the bottom layer is a traditional silicon heterojunction cell (absorbing long-wavelength photons). The two cell layers work in tandem, pushing the utilization efficiency of the solar spectrum toward its theoretical limit.

Li Zhenguo, Chief Scientist at LONGi Green Energy, said: "36.1% efficiency means that out of every 100 watts of sunlight, 36.1 watts are converted into electricity. Five years ago, this number was below 30%. Perovskite-silicon tandem technology is approaching its theoretical efficiency limit of 43% at a pace exceeding expectations."

On the mass production front, LONGi plans to build the world's first DualSun gigawatt-level production line in Xi'an in Q3 2031, targeting a mass production efficiency of 32%, with module pricing comparable to current high-efficiency PERC cells.
