AI Children's Creativity Companion System WonderMind Pilot: Teaching 6 to 12 Year Olds to Ask Original Questions

WonderMind, jointly released by the University of Helsinki School of Educational Sciences and Wonderful Oy, is the first AI creativity training companion for children aged 6 to 12. WonderMind does not answer children's questions directly. Instead, it guides children to think for themselves through reverse questioning. A pilot study was conducted in 42 primary schools across Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, involving 1,800 children.

The core design principle of WonderMind is "AI as student, not teacher." When a child asks why the sky is blue, traditional educational AI would directly explain Rayleigh scattering, while WonderMind asks back: "What do you think? How might you test your idea?" The system follows the child's train of thought and keeps posing new guiding questions, cultivating curiosity and independent thinking.

Results from the six-month pilot show that children using WonderMind improved 41 percent over the control group in original questioning ability (as evaluated by teachers). They demonstrated the ability to propose more hypotheses from different angles in open-ended situations, and these hypotheses contained more specific verifiable predictions. Riikka Salonen, professor of educational psychology at the University of Helsinki, said this kind of training has significant transfer effects on future STEM learning.
