CreativeLedger AI Copyright Registration Chain Launches: Every AI Generation Recorded on a Public Blockchain

CreativeLedger, a pilot project led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), officially launched in February 2026. The project uses the Ethereum sidechain Polygon as the underlying ledger, recording a timestamp and a prompt hash for every AI-generated work. On day one of the pilot, 42,000 creators completed onboarding, including practitioners in graphic design, music composition, and short-video content.

Onboarding is extremely simple. After any output from a mainstream AI generation tool, a browser extension automatically packages the work's hash, an encrypted digest of the prompt text, and the creation timestamp into a Polygon transaction. WIPO covers the gas fees, so creators pay nothing in cryptocurrency. Ana Beltran, head of digital creativity at WIPO, said the project's core goal is to establish "undeniable priority of creation."

The legal effect of CreativeLedger is still being defined. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has issued a consultation document treating CreativeLedger records as "prima facie evidence." That means in copyright disputes, a party presenting a CreativeLedger record automatically gains the benefit of a reversed burden of proof. The Japan Patent Office and the Korean Intellectual Property Office have also stated they recognize the mechanism.

The first wave of integrated tools includes Adobe Firefly, Canva Magic Studio, and Suno v6. Midjourney and the Stable Diffusion community edition are developing compatible plugins, expected to ship in April 2026. WIPO said all compatible tools will use a unified metadata standard so that cross-tool records can be aggregated and queried.

In an interview, top Xiaohongshu blogger "Design Assistant" said her AI-generated design works had been plagiarized multiple times over the past year, but the lack of proof of creation time made enforcement difficult. After joining CreativeLedger, every work automatically generates an immutable proof of priority before publication, giving her a verifiable record when facing plagiarism.
