Solid-State Battery Mass Production Year Begins: EVs with 1,000km Range Start Delivery

CATL and BYD simultaneously release solid-state battery mass production models on the same day. Both exceed 1,000km range, 15 minutes to 80% charge. EV range competition enters a new phase.

Two Giants Release

On June 11, China's two major power battery giants CATL and BYD simultaneously released mass production models equipped with solid-state batteries. EVs officially enter the "solid-state era."

CATL — "Qilin Solid-State"

  • Partner brands: Avatr, Zhiji, NIO
  • Battery capacity: 150kWh (vehicle)
  • Range: CLTC 1,080km
  • Fast charge: 15 min to 80% (400kW ultra-fast)
  • Price premium: ~60,000 RMB more than equivalent models
  • Delivery: Orders open now, Q3 delivery start

BYD — "Blade Solid-State"

  • Partner brands: BYD brand full lineup (Han, Tang, Seal)
  • Battery capacity: 140kWh
  • Range: CLTC 1,020km
  • Fast charge: 18 min to 80% (350kW ultra-fast)
  • Price premium: ~50,000 RMB more than equivalent models
  • Delivery: Already in mass production, delivery this month

Solid-State vs Liquid Lithium Battery

Metric Solid-State Ternary Lithium LFP
Energy density 400-500Wh/kg 200-250Wh/kg 160-180Wh/kg
Range (150kWh) 1,000+km 700-800km 600-700km
Safety Extremely high (non-flammable) Moderate (thermal runaway risk) Relatively high
Low-temp performance Excellent Moderate Poor
Cycle life 3,000+ 1,500 3,000+
Cost High (initial) Moderate Low

Market Reaction

After the announcement, CATL stock rose 6.3% in a single day. BYD rose 4.8%. Multiple brokerages raised price targets for both.

Consumer reservation enthusiasm exceeded expectations:

  • NIO ET9 (Qilin Solid-State): 20,000 reservations in 72 hours
  • BYD Han Solid-State: 15,000 reservations on first day

Infrastructure Challenges

Large-scale adoption of solid-state batteries still faces challenges:

  1. Insufficient ultra-fast chargers: Less than 5,000 400kW chargers nationwide
  2. High cost: 50,000-60,000 RMB premium over liquid battery models constrains adoption
  3. Recycling system: Solid-state battery recycling technology not yet mature

Industry Significance

Chen Jun, academician at Chinese Academy of Sciences and battery expert, stated:

"Solid-state battery is the ultimate form of lithium-ion batteries. China being first to volume production means we have obtained definition rights for next-generation batteries. This has strategic significance for the entire new energy industry."
