Year One of Solid-State Battery Mass Production: EVs with 1,000km Range Begin Delivery

CATL and BYD simultaneously launch mass-produced EVs with solid-state batteries, both exceeding 1,000km range and charging to 80% in 15 minutes, marking a new phase in the EV range competition.

Two Giants Launch

On June 11, China's two battery giants—CATL and BYD—simultaneously launched mass-produced EVs equipped with solid-state batteries, officially marking the entry of electric vehicles into the "solid-state era."

CATL — "Kirin Solid-State"

  • Partner brands: Avatr, Zhiji, NIO
  • Battery capacity: 150 kWh (vehicle total)
  • Range: CLTC 1,080 km
  • Fast charge: 80% in 15 minutes (400kW ultra-fast charger)
  • Price premium: ~¥60,000 more than equivalent liquid battery models
  • Delivery: Orders open now; deliveries begin Q3

BYD — "Blade Solid-State"

  • Partner brands: Full BYD lineup (Han, Tang, Seal)
  • Battery capacity: 140 kWh
  • Range: CLTC 1,020 km
  • Fast charge: 80% in 18 minutes (350kW ultra-fast charger)
  • Price premium: ~¥50,000 more than equivalent liquid battery models
  • Delivery: Already in mass production; deliveries begin this month

Solid-State vs. Liquid Lithium-Ion

Metric Solid-State Ternary Lithium LFP
Energy density 400-500 Wh/kg 200-250 Wh/kg 160-180 Wh/kg
Range (150kWh) 1,000+ km 700-800 km 600-700 km
Safety Extremely high (non-flammable) Moderate (thermal runaway risk) Relatively high
Low-temp performance Excellent Moderate Poor
Cycle life 3,000+ 1,500 3,000+
Cost High (initial) Moderate Low

Market Reaction

Following the announcements, CATL's stock rose 6.3% in a single day; BYD gained 4.8%. Multiple securities firms raised price targets for both.

Consumer pre-order enthusiasm exceeded expectations:

  • NIO ET9 (Kirin Solid-State version): Over 20,000 pre-orders in 72 hours
  • BYD Han Solid-State version: 15,000 pre-orders on day one

Infrastructure Challenges

Large-scale adoption of solid-state batteries still faces these challenges:

  1. Insufficient ultra-fast chargers: Fewer than 5,000 400kW ultra-fast chargers nationwide
  2. High cost: 5-6万 yuan premium over liquid battery models limits adoption
  3. Recycling system: Solid-state battery recycling technology is still immature

Industry Significance

Academician Chen Jun, battery expert at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated:

"Solid-state batteries are the ultimate form of lithium-ion batteries. China's first-to-mass-production means we've secured the right to define the next generation of batteries. This is of strategic significance for the entire new energy industry."
