On January 7, 2031, Finnish health technology company OURA released RingBP — the world's first smart ring with medical-grade blood pressure monitoring capabilities. The device uses a multi-wavelength optical sensor array combined with AI algorithms to achieve 24-hour continuous blood pressure tracking, with clinical accuracy meeting AAMI/ISO standards. It has received FDA Class II medical device certification.

Traditional blood pressure monitoring relies on cuff-based devices, which only provide single-point measurement data and suffer from poor patient compliance due to inconvenience. RingBP uses photoplethysmography (PPG) signals combined with pulse transit time (PTT), converting optical signals into blood pressure readings through a deep learning model.

In a multi-center clinical trial involving 3,200 subjects, RingBP achieved systolic blood pressure measurement errors within plus or minus 5 mmHg for 92% of readings and diastolic blood pressure within the same margin for 89%, meeting international standard requirements.

"The value of continuous blood pressure monitoring lies in capturing blood pressure's circadian rhythm and variability," said Paul Muntner, director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at Harvard Medical School. "Single-point measurements may miss critical risk signals such as nocturnal hypertension and morning blood pressure surges."

Another innovation of RingBP is its "blood pressure prediction" feature. By analyzing the user's blood pressure trends, sleep quality, and activity patterns over the past 72 hours, the system can predict the risk of abnormal blood pressure spikes up to 6 hours in advance and alert the user via smartphone to take preventive measures.

However, RingBP currently retails for $349 and requires calibration with a traditional blood pressure monitor every two weeks. OURA says it is developing a calibration-free version, expected to launch in the second half of 2031.

Privacy advocacy groups have expressed concerns about the data security of continuous health monitoring devices. OURA has committed to encrypting all health data on-device and not selling it to third parties.
