AeroForm Shape-Changing Smartphone: Physically Morphing Between Pocket and Palms

Nothing, working with the Royal College of Art, has unveiled the AeroForm concept phone. Built on a shape-memory alloy skeleton, the device physically switches between a 4.2-inch compact form and a 7.6-inch expanded form. Pre-orders topped 180,000 units on day one; a 5,000-unit developer run is slated for Q3 2026.

Consumer electronics brand Nothing and a joint lab at the Royal College of Art unveiled the concept phone AeroForm at London Design Week. The device can physically change shape, switching between a 4.2-inch compact form and a 7.6-inch expanded form for different use cases.

AeroForm's core is a skeleton system driven by shape-memory alloy (SMA). The skeleton consists of seven independent SMA segments, each of which can change curvature under electrical excitation. When the user wants to switch from compact to expanded mode, the phone's internal battery feeds current through the skeleton, completing the morph in about 3.2 seconds. The energy cost of a single transition is extremely low — roughly 0.04 Wh, equivalent to about eight seconds of video playback.

The display uses a stretchable OLED panel developed by Samsung Display. Built around a micro-crack-control technique, the panel can stretch by about 30 percent in area during skeleton morphing without damaging the emissive layer. Pixel density stays constant across both forms: 432 ppi in compact mode and 388 ppi in expanded mode, with the difference compensated by a dynamic sub-pixel rendering algorithm.

The body shell uses a TPU composite developed by Germany's Covestro. The material behaves like ordinary plastic at room temperature but softens above 65 degrees Celsius, so it accommodates SMA skeleton morphing without stress concentration. Klaus Berger, who leads R&D at Covestro, said the material was inspired by the strain-adaptive mechanism of octopus skin.

AeroForm runs NothingOS 4.0 on top of Android 16. The system has been deeply adapted to the morphing form factor — when the body switches from compact to expanded, app windows relayout automatically and launcher icon density adjusts in sync. Nothing CEO Carl Pei said in a live demo that software-side form awareness is the decisive factor for this kind of product; the hardware is just the foundation.

On industrial design, AeroForm was led by a team headed by Royal College of Art professor Asa Snilstveit. Snilstveit, who previously designed award-winning speakers for Bang & Olufsen, brought Nordic minimalism into the phone form factor. In compact mode the device measures just 8.7 millimeters thick and weighs 184 grams, in line with mainstream flagships.

Pre-orders opened on day one and exceeded 180,000 units, with demand concentrated in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Nothing announced a limited 5,000-unit developer run in Q3 2026 at $1,499. That price is well above typical flagships but roughly matches early foldable phone pricing.

Hardware specs include Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 processor, 12 GB of LPDDR5X memory, and 512 GB of UFS 4.1 storage. Battery capacity is 4,700 mAh with 100 W wired and 50 W wireless charging. Because the morphing mechanism occupies some internal volume, AeroForm cannot carry a telephoto lens; the main camera uses Sony's 50-megapixel IMX989 sensor.

AeroForm is not the first shape-changing phone. Samsung, LG, and Motorola have all patented similar concepts, but none resolved the durability problem. Nothing claims AeroForm's skeleton has been cycle-tested to more than 200,000 transitions — at 20 morphs per day, that is 27 years of use. The figure comes from preliminary tests by TÜV Rheinland, though the full certification cycle will take three years.

Market analyst Ben Wood is cautiously optimistic about AeroForm's commercial prospects. He noted that shape-changing phones address a real need — users want both portability and a large screen — but the first batch's price tag will limit market penetration. If the price can fall into the $800 range within three years, AeroForm could become the next mainstream phone form factor after the foldable.
