HoloDesk Commercial Edition Launches: Naked-Eye 3D Holographic Display Replaces Traditional Monitors

Looking Glass Factory launched HoloDesk Commercial Edition, a light field display that projects naked-eye 3D holograms viewable by multiple people simultaneously. 2,000 pre-orders from architecture and medical imaging sectors.

HoloDesk Commercial Edition Launches: Naked-Eye 3D Holographic Display Replaces Traditional Monitors

On March 2, 2028, holographic display company Looking Glass Factory launched HoloDesk Commercial Edition in New York. This desktop device projects 3D images into the air that can be viewed from multiple angles without any glasses or headsets.

HoloDesk uses light field display technology, employing an array of 87 micro-projectors to generate a 120-degree viewing angle light field over the desktop area. Multiple people can simultaneously view the same 3D model from different angles, much like examining a real desktop figurine. The device measures 60×40×25 cm and weighs 8.2 kg.

Looking Glass Factory CEO Shawn Frayne said: 'This is the biggest paradigm shift in display technology in 30 years. We no longer need to simulate 3D on a 2D surface — now 3D is just 3D.'

Applications

Architecture firm Gensler was among the first to adopt HoloDesk. Gensler's Technology Director said: 'Designers can view architectural models as holographic projections directly on their desks, which is far more intuitive than rotating 3D models on screens. Clients also understand design proposals more easily.'

Medical imaging is another key application. Mayo Clinic's radiology department has deployed five HoloDesk units for CT and MRI image visualization. The radiology chief said: 'With holographic views, doctors can examine tumor positions and morphology in 360 degrees, improving diagnostic efficiency by approximately 40%.'

Technical Challenges

HoloDesk renders at 4K resolution per viewing angle at 60Hz. However, the current version has two limitations: it works best in dim lighting conditions, and its display volume is limited (approximately 30×20×15 cm).

Frayne said the next-generation product will support daylight use and triple the display volume, but declined to provide a specific timeline.

Market Positioning

HoloDesk Commercial Edition is priced at $128,000, targeting architecture, medical imaging, industrial design, and educational institutions. Looking Glass Factory projects 5,000 units shipped in 2028.

A consumer version is still in development, targeting a price below $2,000. Frayne said: 'We want to make holographic displays as ubiquitous as LCD monitors within five years.'
