Reasoning Cost Index Shows Complex Task Inference Expenses Rising 18% Month-Over-Month

AI reasoning cost tracking platform ReasoningIndex released its latest monthly report on January 20. Data shows enterprise AI inference costs rose 18% in January 2028 compared to the previous month, marking the third consecutive month of increase.

The report identifies the primary driver as multi-step reasoning tasks growing from 23% of enterprise applications in October 2027 to 41% currently. These tasks require multiple intermediate reasoning rounds, consuming 5 to 12 times more tokens than simple queries.

ReasoningIndex founder David Park stated: "Enterprises are shifting from simple Q&A scenarios to complex decision support, creating exponential demand for reasoning compute." The report also notes that rising inference costs are spawning a "reasoning optimization" sector, including reasoning path compression and cache hit rate improvement technologies.
